FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING (BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE)

The goal of this course is to have participants learn a step-by-step approach to drawing and shading based on the renaissance style of the old masters. We will cover the basic principles of drawing that build a solid foundation for your artistic endeavours. Learn at your own pace. Teaching techniques include demonstrations, step-by-step illustrations, reference drawings, paintings and photographs. We will cover the progression from basic sketch to refined drawing, skills (measuring, fixed points, plumb line, flows, negative spaces), an approach to florals and landscapes, elements of perspective and an approach to working from photographs (composition, cropping). This course is perfect for the (absolute!) beginner and those wanting to improve their drawing skills. The intermediate component introduces shading (tones), advanced drawing skills, and allows for more self-directed learning in a specific area of interest. All materials are included in this course. Instructor: Nina Birdi (Ottawa)
Spring 2013: Mondays 1:00 - 3:00 pm Apr 8 - Jun 17 (ex May 20) $167 (10 classes)
PAINTING TECHNIQUES IN ACRYCLIC AND OIL
This course will explore painting techniques in acrylics or oils with a focus on creating depth in a realistic painting style. Participants will learn the basic principles of painting and colour mixing. Specific painting techniques will include: drawing with a paint brush, direct vs. indirect approach to painting, dry brushing, glazing, softening edges, use of different brushes, and textural effects. During the course we will use a limited colour palette with a strong focus on mixing secondary and tertiary colours (including browns and blacks), and ‘greying down’ intense colours (critical to creating depth), in order to explore the full colour spectrum. We will use studio still-life set-ups, in addition to working from reference photographs and paintings. Techniques learned will be applicable to a wide range of subject matter. This course is perfect for beginners and those wanting to improve their painting skills. Drawing is not a prerequisite. The intermediate component will cover advanced painting skills based on individual interests. (Ottawa)
All basic course materials are provided (canvas pads, palette paper, easels, paint, brushes, glazing medium).

March 12 Il bidone (The swindlers)
(1955 drama, b&w 100 min, with Broderick Crawford, Richard Baseheart, Franco Fabrizi and Giulietta Masina)
Aging, small-time con man Augusto works with two younger men, Roberto and Bruno, nicknamed Picasso. Augusto avoids personal entanglements, spending money at clubs seeking the good life. His attitude changes when he runs into his own daughter …
April 9 La dolce vita
(1960drama b&w 124 min, with Marcello Matroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée, Yvonne Fourneaux, Alain Cluny, Valeria Ciangottini, Jacques Sernas and Laura Betti)
The story of a journalist's week in Rome, and his search for both happiness and love that will never come. Generally cited as the film that marks the transition between Fellini's earlier neo-realist films and his later art films, it is widely considered as one of the great achievements in world cinema. La Dolce Vita won the Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for best foreign picture.
May 7 8 ½
(1963, comedy-drama b&w 132 min, with Marcello Mastroianni, Anouk Aimée, Sandra Milo, Claudia Cardinale, Rossella Falk, Mario Pisu, Barbara Steel and Guido Alberti)
Guido Anselmi (Mastroianni), a famous Italian film director, is suffering from "director's block". Stalled on his new science fiction film that includes veiled autobiographical references, he has lost interest amid artistic and marital difficulties. As Guido struggles half-heartedly to work on the film, a series of flashbacks and dreams delve into his memories and fantasies; they are frequently interwoven with reality. One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini’s 8½ turns one man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema, a masterpiece: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act.
May 28 I clowns (The clowns)
(1952 comedy, colour 89 min, with Federico Fellini, Riccardo Billi, Tino Scotti, Fanfulla and Dante Maggio)
Fellini reveals his great attraction for clowns and the world of the circus, first by recalling a childhood experience when the circus arrives near his home. Then he joins his crew and travel from Italy to Paris chasing the last great European clowns still living in these countries. He also meets Anita Ekberg trying to buy a panther in a circus. ……

WINE (AND FOOD) TASTINGS WITH J. PHILIP NICHOLSON
Launched lst year, these fun and informal tastings with the Glebe’s own award winning Sommelier J. Phillip Nicholson (founder of the National Capital Sommelier Guild and former Ottawa Wine Person of the Year) were instant classics and now they're back.
Each evening has a special theme, emphasizing the kind of wine and food to be sampled and discussed. typically eight or more wines paired with favulous fare from some of the region's top culinary talent. Not quite a full meal, but pretty darned close! (Always some vegetarian offerings.)As for the wine, there are always a few classic match-ups but also always a bunch of 'outliers' that introduce less well-known grapes, producers, regions and/or pairings. Total funsies! And don't worry, Phil's no wine snob: the evenings are as emgagomg as they are informative. As Phil says:"Pretty much stand-up comedy with stemware". caution, these ar ehugely popular and sell out quickly.
APRIL FOOL BLIND WINE TASTING
Glebe’s own J. Phillip Nicholson (founder of the National Capital Sommelier Guild and former Ottawa Wine Person of the Year) continues with his hugely popular seasonal tastings. This time, he’ll lead us through a “blind tasting” with wines revealed only after we’ve all had fun telling the truth about what we’ve been tasting with no knowledge of grape, maker, region or price. An informative hoot! As always, enough local cuisine tastings to make for the moral equivalent of a light meal. Always a sell-out, so book now.

HOOPING FOR ADULTS - BASIC
Why should kids have all the fun? Exercise doesn’t have to be so serious. Hooping is feel-good fitness! Have fun, work up a sweat, shape your core and feel sexy. The custom hoops used are not ‘kids hula hoops’, they are larger and heavier, allowing them to rotate more slowly around your body. This means that even if you think you can’t hoop, with one of these hoops, you can, regardless of age, size, or sense of rhythm. You’ll be keeping the momentum going while learning tricks before you know it. This is a great cardiovascular workout and builds muscle tone. The whole class is set to upbeat music and taught by professional hula-hooper Sophie Latreille of Fire Weavers Performance Troupe. No experience necessary! Drop in for your first class or sign up for the progressive session. To check out what is being done with hoops these days, visit www.hooping.org. You will be amazed!
